Neuter My Dog – Everything You Should Know About the Process

If you ask when to neuter my dog, you should be aware of certain things as a responsible pet owner.

You might know that neutering is a process that sterilizes your male pet. This process will make sure that he becomes incapable of parenting puppies. It is different from the female version, which is referred to as a spay and is a much more complicated surgery.

Professional veterinarian:

A professional veterinarian can make the process easy and pain-free for your male dog. It is in fact, a simple surgery as compared to spaying a female dog. Your pet will be given an anesthesia. After he becomes unconscious, an incision will be made before the scrotum through which his testicles will be removed. After removal of testicles, the incision will be stitched. The recovery time is very minimal and the pet can be dropped off and picked up in the same day.

What are the benefits?

Now you know the answer to the process on how to neuter my dog, what are some of the differences you may see in your pet?

  • The process will reduce the chances of certain diseases like prostate and testicular cancer.
  • As there will be lesser testosterone in his system, which sometimes results in a calmer demeanor.
  • As the male is less inclined to go after female dog, you also might see reduced barking or frantic marking of territory
  • In the case of older dogs, neutering will help with reducing the size of enlarged prostate, which can be very painful.

When is the right time to neuter?

If you are concerned when to neuter my dog, it is generally stated that that a male can be neutered anytime 14 weeks after his birth. However, it is better to talk to your veterinarian, who can give specific recommendation after evaluating your pet. Those dogs that are neutered before they reach their puberty will sometimes be affected differently as compared to those neutered after puberty. One of the reasons is that testosterone is involved in the growth of the pet and in the personality traits they display. Remember that most dogs become sexually matured by the age of 7-8 months, so don’t wait too long!
